ARG Plumbing Tips
ARG Plumbing would like to share some important information that will save you time, water damage and money.
Main Water Shut Off ValveEveryone who lives in your home should know the location of the main water valve. This valve controls the flow of water into your home. To find the main water valve, locate the water meter installed by the utility company. The valve is most likely on the side of the pipes feeding into your house.
If valves are not moved for long periods of time they will seize up and may not close easily or at all. Make sure to turn the valves underneath your sinks and any other valves at least once a year ensuring they will work when you need to shut them off for repair.
If you are not using water the dials or digital display on the meter should not be moving or spinning. Any movement may indicate a water leak.
Before going to bed, shut off everything in your house that uses water. Find the water meter and write down the exact number of gallons used. The next morning, check the water meter. If it has changed, you have a leak. Or if there is a dial, use a sharpie to mark the exact location.
Watch out for spiders inside your meter box.
If your toilet is starting to overflow, remove the tank lid, reach down and push the flapper closed. This will stop water from going into the bowl and overflowing.
Take off the tank lid and pour in some food coloring. Check the water in the bowl about after 20 minutes later. If you see color you have a leak.
Do not pour fats or cooking oils into your sink. Liquid fats can solidify in cold drain pipes, trap food particles, and clog the drains. Corn husks, artichokes, onion skins, celery, and other high-fiber material can clog your disposal.
